Physical, People, Practical, Self
These are the four main elements of the Australian Guide Program.
They
are further broken down into
seven fundamental components, which together distinguish Guiding
from most other youth organisations and children's activities.
Promise and Law
All Guides and uniformed adults make the Guide Promise, and try to live up
to it in their everyday life. Through the Promise and Law, Guiding offers girls and women a philosophy for living. Patrol
System
Within each Guide unit, girls are split into two or more Patrols, usually
with a three to four year age range. The Patrol offers girls closer friendships and a
greater sense of belonging, as well as opportunities to develop skills in
teamwork and leadership. Outdoors
Guiding offers girls an opportunity to explore the outdoors and gain an
appreciation for the natural world. The outdoors also offers adventure and
challenges to help girls grow strong and confident. Service
Giving service to the community is at the very heart of Guiding. Whether
raising money, collecting used clothing, gardening for the elderly or just
helping around the house, Guides gain a sense of self-worth and
greater understanding of their community by 'giving something back'. World
Guiding
Guiding doesn't only happen in Australia - it is a worldwide movement with
over 10 million members in 140 countries. Girls learn about Guides in
other countries, helping to break down prejudices and build international
friendships. Girls also have opportunities to travel overseas to Guiding
events. Guiding Traditions
A sense of history and ceremony helps girls to understand the importance of
tradition in our society and enhances the feeling of belonging to something
important. Leadership
Ultimately we hope that girls who pass through Guiding are able to develop
their leadership skills so that they can play a confident, responsible role
in their family, workplace and community.
